Female Continence Therapy Service

MKPCT has commissioned a new community continence therapy service for females with urinary incontinence from 1st August 2008.

The service accepts direct GP referrals and is run by a multidisciplinary team comprising of Jo Pitts, Specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapist and Lesley Thurston, Advanced Urology Nurse Practitioner, with the support of Miss M Pandit, gynaecologist with special interest in uro-gynaecology.

This service has been developed in accordance with recent NICE guidelines and the Map of Medicine pathway.

How does this service work?
The patient will be seen quickly, in response to your direct referral.   Patients with stress incontinence will have a minimum of 3 months’ supervised pelvic floor exercises tailored to their needs, which has been shown to be the most effective first line treatment.

Patients with urge or mixed urinary incontinence will have a minimum of 6 weeks’ bladder training as first line treatment.

Onward referrals can be made by the team direct to urodynamics or the gynaecologist with special interest in uro-gynaecology, where necessary following first line treatment.

GPs will be notified of the outcome of the initial assessment, treatment and if appropriate, onward referral.  Patient will normally receive copies of these letters.

Procedures performed
The service provides assessment, supervised pelvic floor exercise and treatment for patients and scans for bladder flow, volume and residual volume as required.
